‘Rudolph’s Shiny New Year’ 11/365

This is all about the lovely things I found today. They are all very shiny, and all from the same Etsy shop. Click on an image to view the item in the shop!

We seem to be watching a lot of films recently, which isn’t a bad thing really. Tonight is the Southpark film, and I remember every word of every song. Sad? It was one of my favourite films from my older childhood years. The Mole is possibly the best character who is introduced in this amazing title, and I love his dying song above any other Southpark number.

Enough wanting and reminiscing. It’s getting late so I must flee.

P.S Yesterday’s post title was another Japanese film, found by entering the subject of my post into IMDB, and yesterday was all about inspections. See a trend forming? Today’s is slightly more ambiguous though…

‘Molester Train: Underwear Inspection’. 10/365

We are officially into double figures with this post!

Had another house change around, and the rooms are looking great. We have a lot more space in the living room now that I’ve moved the rabbit’s cage into the spare room, and he seems to be quite pleased with it too. We still have a litter tray in the living room so he doesn’t get confused, but all seems well at the moment. The mayhem usually happens at night when he has to amuse himself, and he either chews things or jumps on my face, so it could be a rough sleep while he adjusts to the new arrangement. As I type this I can hear a loud rumble from upstairs where he is running around like a lunatic; it does mean he’s happy, but it is slightly distracting.

We also had our house inspection today, as we are awaiting a new rental contract. Everything is fine, except our landlord wants to put the rent up a bit. We can’t afford that, and our estate agent knows this, so they are helping us keep the original price. It should all be fine, but it’s yet another minor inconvenience to worry about.

I haven’t played any games, or wrote anything today. All my attention and energy has been set on cleaning the house for the inspection (and spring cleaning), so I lacked time for anything else. After moving furniture, boxes, cages, clothes, more furniture, cleaning, scrubbing etc I am thoroughly pooped.

Writing my ilomilo review tomorrow, which should be a lot of fun, so I’ll link to that in tomorrow’s post if it’s up.

That’s all for now; going to watch the other half play some PES 2011 and listen to Fleetwood Mac, because… you know, they rock!

P.S for anyone who didn’t pick up on yesterday’s blog title, it’s a Japanese film. Almost want to watch it… although it seems a bit messed up. You have to wonder what happened to the original cow?

‘A lonely cow weeps at dawn’. 9/365

This afternoon I finished Singularity, and apart from a big boss fight on a train, I thoroughly enjoyed it. For anyone who hasn’t played it, the game takes ideas from Half Life, Call of Duty, and Bioshock and merges them all in a frenzy of scientific research disasters. Mutants of various size and ability come at you in a secret time-shifting location owned by Russia, and it is your job to change the fate of it’s inhabitants. With two or three scary bits (the majority being right at the beginning in a school), the rest is all fairly straight forward. With the mix of FPS, puzzle solving, and interesting plot, this is definitely a game I would recommend… not rave about, but recommend all the same. I would be interested to see a sequel, as the ending leaves it very open to speculation.

I have also almost finished ilomilo. I am just having a slight problem with the last few levels, but I’m sure I’ll get there in the end. It’s one of those games you can pick up for a short amount of time and have some fun with, without getting too involved. Now just to finish The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

My ‘bolognese’ from yesterday turned out well. I ended up with seven portions, one of which I ate last night. Yummy!

Over the last week or so we have been gradually working on the spring cleaning. We also have a house inspection tomorrow, so just as well really. I love having a tidy house, but we still lack enough storage space to put all our belongings in so the house often looks cluttered. Getting there though…

My sister, and our ‘ever since she was a baby’ family friend, are coming to stay on Thursday until Friday. I am really looking forward to it, as I always have fun when they visit. I sometimes feel that I am rather alone where we live now. We moved to Kent from Essex for my university course, and since that finished we chose to stay. I do have friends here, but sometimes I go weeks without any real interaction, which is usually down to my laziness, or my inapt approach to having friends. This year, I hope, will be different, and I will make more of an effort to be sociable. It’s not my fault that I quite enjoy being a hermit is it?

I leave you with something cheery: my favourite part of Toy Story 3.

Stocking up. 8/365

Yesterday I mentioned in my oh-so-brief post that I was playing poker. I actually did pretty well and came second out of four players, which for me is amazing as I am usually out first. My boyfriend won overall, so I still won too in a way, and we stopped playing after our friend dropped out. We could have played on to see if I ACTUALLY came second or not, but it was getting late so we ended it.

I realised that my picture yesterday is rather strange. A bit bug eyed…

After being up all night trying to finish the poker game, we got up around midday today. I always feel like I’ve let myself down when I get up so late, like I am constantly wasting half of my life, but I really do love sleep too much. I’m just one of those people who hates early starts. I fainted the other day when I was just about to set off in my car because I had got up too early. Ridiculous ey? The rest of today has been spent at Pets at Home, and in the kitchen. I needed new supplies for the rabbit (grass, hay, straw), and I have been cooking a huge batch of my own style of bolognese. I’m pretty sure its not the correct way to make a spag-bol but I like it and that’s all that matters right?

Bolognese a la Juice Box

Ingredients

2 packets of fresh beef mince (just under 1kg in total)

2 tins plum tomatoes

half tube of tomato paste

garlic paste or chopped garlic cloves (I put in a lot but it is up to you)

beef stock cube

salt + pepper

red wine

How to…

Fry off the garlic (if using chopped) until lightly brown. Cooking it too much makes it taste bitter. Add this to a big pot with the tinned tomatoes, tomato paste, salt, pepper, stock cube (and garlic paste if using this instead of chopped). Heat up slowly while using a pan to brown off the mince. When the mince has browned add the lot to the tomato mixture. Stir together and add two cups of water to make more sauce, and some red wine. Leave to simmer for a few hours, stirring occasionally until all the meat is soft and the tomatoes have broken down. If it looks like it is getting too thick simply add more water or wine. Serve on spaghetti and sprinkle grated cheese on top. Simple.

Because this is rather a lot of food, this can be frozen in portions and will last ages.

So basically my bolognese is mince, tomato and garlic. Yummy! This batch of bolognese will last me for a whole week of dinners, so its a great way for me to save money (as long as I don’t get bored of it).

Aside from the food chat, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has shown interest in my blog so far. I have already met several nice people through doing this, and I am almost enjoying the challenge.

Thats it for today, off to watch Futurama!

Being sociable. 7/365

Well done to everyone, and myself, for getting through the first week.

Tonight four of us are playing poker round our humble abode. I am still quite a novice at the game, but we just added up our chips for this toilet break and I seem to be winning. Not by a hugely noticeable amount, but enough for me to be reasonably satisfied with myself. For this reason my blog will be brief. Good job I remembered to write this actually or I would have kicked myself for failing at the end of the very first week.

Pixel is the dealer.

Until tomorrow (and poker results).

I promise… 6/365

I didn’t get round to writing my new year’s resolutions when I said I would, so I might as well give it a go now.

  • Write ‘A Day with Juice Box’ every day, without fail. I hope this will constantly keep my on my toes, and make writing a joy every day of the week. I also hope this will be good practice for my creativity.
  • Get a great job. This has to be many people’s resolutions, but for me it is very important. Since I graduated in summer 2009 I haven’t been that lucky with jobs, and could really do with something magical. I know I am just another statistic as a recent graduate without a job, but I hope to rectify that, and for once maybe not work in a shop or a bar. I want something that doesn’t just pay the bills, but an actual career that I can be proud of. That can’t be too much to ask for, right?
  • Eat healthier. There is a major flaw with my daily diet; I hate the majority of vegetables that are readily available. At the moment I eat: parsnips, potatoes, sweetcorn (only on the cob), tomatoes (if they are in a sauce environment), sweet potato, and… thats about it. I really need to broaden my veggie horizons this year.
  • Make the garden beautiful. We sorted the garden a bit last year, but it has gone back to weeds over winter. I want to make new flower beds, extend the original beds, and make a mini vegetable patch. Hopefully growing my own veggies will aid with the resolution above.
  • Read more. I have been getting really enthusiastic about comics recently. I really have no knowledge of comics and graphic novels, so you could say I’m starting from scratch. I’m sure as the year goes on I will discuss some that I get round to reading, and I am bound to get some stick for getting my facts wrong etc. Should be fun.

There are others, but they are rather mundane.

I have played a lot of ilomilo today, and it is rather enjoyable. Can’t wait to write my review, I have a feeling it will be very positive!

That’s all for today, we are watching a program on BBC3 about smoking weed.

Spring cleaning and cutsie games 5/365

I have been gradually spring cleaning the house this week. Today was the turn of the living room, and the Christmas tree came down, which took a lot longer than I had anticipated. After receiving several new books as presents I had to rearrange the bookshelf to find space. Wizard (my rabbit) was very keen to help with the organisation of the magazines.

Yesterday’s post was featured on the Man v Food Daily. I’m still not entirely sure how it got there, but its great all the same! If someone can explain to me how paper.li works I would be grateful!? I for one LOVE the Man v Food program, especially the carnivore episodes. They just make me want to tear into some huge steaks that are still bleeding…

I am also now part of the One a Day community, which seems like a great bunch of people. We are a collective of people who are all doing the one a day blog (if that wasn’t obvious) and there are several names in the group who I know already, which is nice! If you are doing a one a day blog and want to join in just head over to the site and sign up before the 8th January. They are also raising money for the Cancer Research UK charity, and the TWLOHA charity so its all for a good cause.

Today is a very exciting day for the Xbox Live Arcade as ilomilo is being launched! I have been so excited for this game since July last year when I found out about it; its adorable characters, silly music and spongy looking puzzles (spongy is the only way I could think of describing them) I think it is set to be a winner. I spoke to the lovely guys from Southend Interactive in Sweden today, who made the game, and managed to grab a copy, so expect a review very soon (once I can get the boyfriend off the game that is). I’m thinking of crocheting some little characters from the game too, so I am definitely into their style!

Also on the review list is Big Sky on the PC, by Boss Baddie. Its a pretty awesome looking side scrolling shooter, and has some great techo/dance/trance music (I’m not too good at defining that style of music genre) which I can hear from the boyfriend’s computer upstairs as I type this. If he is playing that though, it means he is finished with ilomilo for now!…

We seem to be going through a Pixar moment in the house. After watching Toy Story 3, and then Up last night we are slowly making our way through their back catalogue. How I dream of going to the Pixar studios; it just looks like such a fun place to be. Up honestly made me cry with the very first scenes, and I said that I hated it for doing that to me so early on in the film. I obviously don’t actually hate it. The music, characters, and style are typical Pixar, and you can’t really fault it. This film may not be quite as appealing as the Toy Story series, but it definitely gives it a run for it’s money. This title seems far more art-driven than some of the other films; it is stunning, romanticised, classical… and it makes my heart melt. Definitely one I would recommend, but only if you have a box of tissues ready.

I am off now to have a go at ilomilo because I can’t wait any longer!

Smile and the world smiles with you… 4/365

I played a lot of Singularity yesterday, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Well, I haven’t given up on it yet so it can’t be that bad. According to the boyfriend I am about half way through it already, so its either not that long, or I am blitzing it (or maybe a bit of both). The only thing that semi-bugs me is that the enemies have grenades, but your character doesn’t. Why put in a fighting mode where you can catch their grenades and throw them back, if you don’t have some of your own?

We are just about to watch Pixar’s Up, and I am prepared with tissues. From the trailers and clips I have seen, I am already expecting the tugging of heart-strings and the squeezing of tear ducts. Because of this, my post today will be briefer than previous ones.

Share something that makes you smile.

Although it may seem I am quite unhappy according to my recent posts, there are a lot of people and things that make me smile.

Photo montage…

I don’t really feel like showing images of every cute/amazing/colourful item in my life that makes me smile. Maybe throughout the year these will talked about in detail.

Until tomorrow.

Juice Box

P.S I gave up on this post half way through and watched the film. My goodness… why are Pixar so good at making you feel amazing then tearing you down into darkness within the first few minutes of a film. It was the same with Finding Nemo. Damn you Pixar. More on Up tomorrow!

Early bird. 3/365

I have a craving to write today’s post already, which I never thought was possible. It’s not really that early (past midday), but its early in comparison to the evening. I did not expect to actually enjoy this as much as I do. Maybe its because the majority of my content is based on venting my inner demons, which are more than likely going to come billowing out of this blog on more than one occasion. Maybe I just like talking to myself. Whatever the reason, I am finding this process far more interesting than the skepticism of a mere two days prior.

I’ve never really fancied the idea of forcing myself to post everyday on a blog until this year… not sure why. Maybe it’s because I ramble, don’t have enough time, or often have too many thoughts to put into words.

So today I would like to discuss my evening last night. The other half finished Singularity, so now I suppose it is my turn to try out the Bioshock/Halflife/CoD influenced gameplay to see if I can overcome strange mutants and time-travel. I still have The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to finish; I think I am about half way through, while video documenting my experience with it as I have never played through a Zelda game. This is a dark secret I wish to rectify. We then watched Toy Story 3, which at times made me want to cry, and others brought nostalgia from the 90′s and watching the first film with my then 3 year old little sister. I think I had just turned 7 when Toy Story hit the cinemas, and I loved it. Now with a reasonably acceptable sequel, and a pretty hilarious threequel, I am beyond any doubt that my future children will be forced to watch them… and enjoy them damn it! While watching the film, I believe a quote from my other half was ‘if they die in this furnace I will never forgive Pixar, and there will be a stern letter heading their way’. Lucky break for Pixar then, shit would have got messy!

We then turned to BBC2, which never usually gets a look-in within our living room, to watch the wonderful Bruce Parry’s new series, Arctic, in which he visits various indigenous groups of people, and aims to learn their customs. I have always been a Parry fan, ever since he started the Tribe series back in 2005. Granted he made some other documentaries before that time, but Tribe was the first one that was really given a lot of attention, and it came out at the time in my life when I actually started seeing the world in a different light. So I am rather excited about this new series within the Arctic circle. Starting with the reindeer herders and horse breeders of Siberia, it immediately makes me long to travel. Idealistically I would love to just pack up everything and live in a place like that for an unrestrained amount of time; maybe until I find a way to move to another dramatically beautiful place somewhere around the world. Who knows, one day I might not write on this blog because I’m too busy packing for a great adventure. I can but hope.

What’s the single most important thing you accomplished in 2010?

Today’s topic is again vast. I can think of things that, to me, could be an accomplishment, but in the grand scheme of things they are rather mundane. Here is a list, and I’ll leave it to readers to decide if they were really worth mentioning.

  • I learned to drive, and passed both tests first time. Since then I haven’t killed anyone, except maybe the spirit trapped inside a plastic bollard that I reversed into, and the tailgate that is now creased.
  • I decided to try and follow the career path of a games journalist. At the moment it is still a hobby, but who knows what the future holds.
  • I had a few days work experience with Xbox World 360 magazine in Bath. I had to travel across the country to get there, and stay on my own in an unknown town and B+B, but it was worth it.
  • I have attended press events in said career path, and had a lot of fun in the process. I have met some great people along the way, and I hope to meet a great many more. It has taught me a lot this year; if you want something then you cant hide away in these situations and just be as open and enthusiastic as you can be with everyone.
  • I have played more computer games than I ever have before, probably due to press copies and needing to write about them, but I have actually enjoyed the process with nearly every game, no matter how crap.
  • We upgraded our family from myself and the boyfriend, to myself, the boyfriend, a cat and a rabbit. Now that we have them running around the house all day and night, I’m not sure I could live without them. They both get on really well with each other, and have both been taught the rules of the house with minimal effort.
  • I started a craft project which now spans the world (pretty much). It is called Planet Blanket, and anyone can join in. The aim is to make a huge blanket made from crochet squares contributed by people from every country. The project has been featured in several magazines and newspapers, and so far the blanket is huge. I can hardly store it in my house anymore. We have also been raising money for the Every Child charity, which can be donated to on the website.

That’s what comes to mind when I think of last year. I think tomorrow I will write some new year’s resolutions. Already have some in the back of my mind, but it’s nice to make them official, and see how many I can actually keep to.

I have also written my about page, full of wonderful nonsense that really doesn’t matter too much. Links are now to the right of the page to my twitter account, if you want to follow me, and my Amazon wish list, for… you know… presents (or just to see the types of things I’m into).

So that’s it for another day. I think I am going to do some more housework, and aim to at least start Singularity.

Bye for now.

Juice Box

… and so it continues… 2/365

Well I’m back again so I haven’t fallen at the first hurdle. I have already had quite a good response from starting this blog, so maybe encouragement alone will keep me going.

So I suppose this is the part where I talk about my day. Due to late nights and early starts over the past few days, I managed to sleep through the whole of the morning, minus ten minutes. Good going I thought. This afternoon I have mostly been eating half a meat feast pizza with sour cream on the side, watching my other half play Singularity, housework, and checking eBay for crazy deals on Lego mini-figures. After these trivial moments, I have come to the conclusion that maybe I would like to play Singularity when he has finished with it, and that I am never going to quite fulfil my desire to own all the mini-figures in the world, as there are just too many to choose from. I get overwhelmed and confused, yet momentarily joyous when I can add a new plastic character to my collection. To the majority of any readers out there this could seem quite a nerdy and unfulfilling pastime to undertake, but to the rare few who might have an inkling as to my craving, this could be somewhat relative. I’m sure with time I will include a post showing off my Lego collection, but for now I will leave it as an essence of my mild insanity for anyone to mull over.

Name someone who deserves more credit than they get (and for bonus points, how to change things so they get more).

Today’s topic has me muddled. I could opt in for the righteous path of choosing someone who works hard for a charity, who selflessly gives up their time to aid others, and to make the world a better place. That would be the most idealistic thing to do. I could speak of a family member, or a close friend, who I think needs a bit of encouragement, some good luck, or some recognition in our day to day existence. That would be the most personal thing to do. I could, if I were arrogant enough, write about myself. I could say how I need a lucky break, a kick up the arse, and some direction. That would be the most selfish thing to do.

So with that, I’m not sure who I would choose for this topic. I believe charity work is the most honourable thing someone can do with their time. They make the world shine. I wish I could be more like that. I believe friends and family are the people who keep us on our feet, who steady us when we are falling, or get too big for our shoes. These should be the people that anyone would want to give credit for, as they make you who you are.

As for myself… well I’m not that much of a dick. I do need a lucky break, a kick up the arse, and a direction, but these are things I can work out on my own, and I don’t think I have done enough in this world yet to warrant any credit.

Stay tuned for yet more life affirming drivel tomorrow.
